If you have over 10K followers on Instagram, rejoice! You can add links to your Instagram Stories.

And stories links, also known as “swipe up” links, could be getting a major upgrade. 

That’s right. Instagram is trialling a new way to add links on stories: link stickers.

Instagram is testing a new clickable link sticker that could replace the “swipe up” link.

Previously, a tiny arrow and text prompt would appear at the bottom of a story, and users would have to perform an upwards swiping motion in order to open the link.

The new link sticker is much more visible, and can be added anywhere on a story. It also shows viewers the first part of the destination link, giving more transparency.

However, brands and creators can use a link converter tool (like bit.ly) to create shortened vanity URLs.

As with “swipe up” links, link stickers are limited to one per story, and are only available to Business or Creator accounts with more than 10K followers.

How to Add Links to Instagram Stories 

Instagram Stories links are a super effective way to drive traffic from the app, especially when paired with educational or inspiring stories.

In order to add links to your Instagram Stories, you first need to meet Instagram’s eligibility requirements. 

You’ll need to have: 

Once you meet both of these requirements, you’ll be able to add links to your stories. 

How to Add Links to Instagram Stories Step #1: Create a Story 

First up, open the Instagram Stories camera and take a photo, video, or upload from your camera roll as usual. 

Once your content is ready, you’ll see a link icon at the top of your screen. 

This will add a “swipe up” link to your story.

If you do not see a link icon, you probably have access to link stickers instead. Head to the Instagram Stories sticker tray icon and scroll until you see the link sticker.

NOTE: Only one “swipe up” link or sticker can be added per story.

How to Add Links to Instagram Stories Step #2: Enter or Paste the URL 

Once you click the link button or select the link sticker, you’ll be taken to a page where you can either enter or paste a URL. 

For “swipe up” links, a call-to-action button will automatically appear at the bottom of the screen underneath your story.

For link stickers, you can reposition the button by dragging it across the screen, and resize it 

by performing a pinch motion with your fingertips. You can also select from three different colorways by tapping the icon before publishing.

How to Add Links to Instagram Stories Step #3: Add a Call-to-action 

If you really want to drive traffic from stories, it’s important to add a clear call-to-action.

This could be a verbal call out, some on-screen text, an animated GIF, or all of the above.

“Swipe up” links aren’t always the easiest to spot, so prompting your followers to follow your links can really boost your clicks (and sales!).
